Why you should keep your children's baby teeth?

According to a team of researchers from Imperial College London, preserving your children's baby teeth could one day save their lives.

Baby teeth are rich in stem cells

Parents don't always keep their children's baby teeth, and they are mistaken. This is what Sara Rankin, a biologist at Imperial College London, asserts in an interview with BBC News. According to her research, stem cells can be found in baby teeth that could be used to cure serious illnesses and even some cancers. Until now, stem cells were harvested from embryos or umbilical cord blood.

Stem cells are highly valuable because they possess two properties, "the ability to self-renew indefinitely, providing an unlimited supply of material, and the ability to give rise to multiple cell types," explains the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm). Through cell therapy, healthy cells can be transplanted to restore the function of tissue or an organ.

Advancements in stem cell research

According to Sara Rankin, "recycling" your child's baby teeth to preserve their stem cells could prove very useful in the case of leukemia (blood cancer), for example. It should be noted, however, that the storage of stem cells for therapeutic purposes is prohibited in France but allowed in Switzerland. In Switzerland, there are stem cell storage banks.

Some researchers suggest that we have not yet fully explored the potential of stem cells. Perhaps they could one day be used to treat Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, or diabetes. However, it is worth noting that to extract stem cells from baby teeth, they would need to be removed before they naturally fall out and stored at temperatures below -190°C.
